Ari Up

The Slits are probably the single most important all-girl punk band in the history of music. A bold statement, we know, but certainly not a controversial one.  As a 14 year old, Ari Up served as the band's flamboyant front woman and helped develop The Slits' pioneering punky reggae sound. She grew up in England surrounded by punk royalty. Her mother, who is married to John Lydon of the Sex Pistols, ran a sort of punk house, where it wasn't uncommon to have people like The Clash and Jimi Hendrix roll through.

Bob Marley

His Story
The Life and Legacy of Bob Marley

Bob Marley was a hero figure, in the classic mythological sense. His departure from this planet came at a point when his vision of One World, One Love -- inspired by his belief in Rastafari -- was beginning to be heard and felt. The last Bob Marley and the Wailers tour in 1980 attracted the largest audiences at that time for any musical act in Europe.

Madussa

Madussa is the Dancehall moniker for Ari Up of the English punk band The Slits.  Though widely recognized in the Dancehall scenes surrounding Kingston, Jamaica and Flatbush, Brooklyn, Madussa is lesser known in the punk and indie scenes her fans are most familiar with.  The Ari Up album, Dread More Dan Dead is the closest recording of the Madussa sound, yet was released under Ari Up to reach a wider audience.

New Age Steppers

The New Age Steppers was a studio project headed by British dub/reggae producer Adrian Sherwood, founder of On-U Sound Records. Sherwood, by and large, remains the man behind the boards while leaving vocal duties to Ari Up (of The Slits) and Mark Stewart (formerly of The Pop Group) on their eponymous debut LP.

Other notable contributors to the project during its run were Neneh Cherry, Public Image Limited guitarist Keith Levine, Steve Beresford of The Flying Lizards, and current NYU Professor of Punk and Reggae Vivien Goldman.
