Going back to the early dawn of the new wave and punk movements, Mark Lane began his electronic music and tape splicing experiments in 1981. His first release was a vinyl 7” entitled “Love is So Aggravating” and although it was well received, it was the release of his 1984 mini-LP entitled “Who’s Really Listening?” that garnered him critical acclaim and cemented his place historically as one of the early pioneers of minimal electronic synthpop. Tracks like “Sojourn” and “White Glove” still rank very high among djs and aficionados of this era and have become standards of the genre. During 1985 Mr. Lane made a short tour of the Netherlands with the founding members of the Klinik who were then touring their first record. Those shows are still remembered as an innovative and important chapter in the history of the Belgian electronic music scene.
Subsequently, Lane collaborated with a large number of European musicians of the era including Conrad Schnitzler of Tangerine Dream, Martin Bowes of Attrition, and Richard Van Dellen of De Fabriek.
In the mid 90’s, Mark Lane released two CD-EPs “Black Lipstick” and “Shadow Merger” which in essence are sister recordings that certainly pay a lush homage to his use of analogue synthesizers. The height of this ardent halcyon style can be found on what many people consider to be his most accessible effort “Creepy a la Weepy.” Released in 2002 on the Metawave label in Germany, the 8-song CDLP is an amalgamation of the personas he had set forth on previous releases.
His latest outing “Inner Most Folds” is only being made available to followers that are in direct e-mail contact with the multi-media artist. Yes, he is also a proficient Post Modern oil painter. In fact the 4 tracks on the “Inner Most Folds” EP are inspired by his current oil painting series which he has been working on over a year.
