Ad Hoc Art

Bushwick Art Gallery

When Ad Hoc Art opened their doors off the Morgan Avenue stop in Bushwick, they became the first of nearly a dozen innovative spaces to populate the Buswick gallery scene. The gallery specializes in street art, pop surrealism, lowbrow, illustration, comic book, tattoo, and print-making, as well as the larger history of underground art, activism, and graffiti.  In additon to the gallery, Ad Hoc offers a variety of art related workshops and serves as a neighborhood cultural hub that brings together some pretty laid back people.

"We originally came out to Bushwick for studio space and to expand what we were doing as far as being artists and designers and then we made this gallery space part of it. We always thought it would be awesome to be able to show work by people we felt weren’t getting the proper exposure so we created a space that really highlighted what we believe to be socially relevant and interesting artwork."

MUSIC

DJ Small Change - "DJ Small Change is a good friend ours. He DJs for WFMU and is there, spinning at a lot of the parties we like to go to."

Tortoise - "Tortoise are a group of guys from Chicago who are always up to interesting stuff."

The Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - "This is amazing group from Oklahoma. We've gone on tour with them in Europe. They do live art while they are performing."

“A lot of people that walk down the street in Bushwick, that may be here for an infinite number of reasons like loft parties around the corner or whatever, sort of stumble on our space and feel comfortable here, which we think is important. Not only for the space but for culture as a whole. We really want to create a platform for people to come together and discuss things whether superficial and / or profound. This maybe superficial but it also may be profound, but many people have told us that they've met their boyfriend or their girlfriend at our space.”

COLLECTIVES

Amoeba Technology - "Amoeba Technology are a collective of visual artists who do incredible visuals."

Glass Bead Collective - "We've worked with the Glass Bead Collective a lot and they always bring really nice live visual effects and films to parties."

Camp Image Node "We've worked with Camp Image Node who do stuff at Burning Man. It's a really cool audio visual experience, you should really see."

Ad Hoc's NYC

NEIGHBORHOODS & CITY LIFE

Bushwick - "This is a great neighborhood to visit. It’s a really amazing nexus for musicians, visual artists and writers."

Red Hook - "Red Hook has changed a lot already with all the development that’s happening there, but its always been a really weird and pretty ancient neighborhood. It’s a little off the beaten path, but there’s a lot to see there and it’s really beautiful."

Staten Island Ferry "The Staten Island Ferry is a must. It's free and you can get cheap beers if you like drinking cheap beers."

"If I could change New York, there would be less chain stores, less box stores, less rules and less brand names and logos. I want more community parks and gardens, more trees, more open spaces and a greater sense of community. There's so much good stuff here but just like life, you have to feel around to find it. You have to take it upon your own interests to search for it. People expect to be spoonfed awesomeness but you have to work for it. Dig a little."

GALLERIES & MUSEUMS

Factory Fresh - "Factory Fresh was one of the first galleries to sort of show weird stuff and street art in New York."

English Kills - "This gallery shows amazing and spectacular artwork… phenomenal installations that don’t happen anywhere else in the city."

Jonathan Levine Gallery - "This gallery is about showing work that’s not necessarily socially or critically in the same realm as others… he’s definitely a person that over the years has taken a lot of risks as far as showing art that’s outside of the mainstream."

Honey Space - "This space is basically an open venue for artists to come and do work and they have done some awesome and spectacular events and performances."

Alphabeta - "This space has a huge court yard where people can go in and do massive installations and paint. People can go and create large scale art pieces, and it’s just an opportunity to create greater levels of expression."

Cloisters - "The Cloisters Museum shows Medieval art on the Upper West Side. They have a collection of really phenomenal beautiful things."

EVENTS

Nonsense NYC - "This is one of the best resources for underground events listings and everything else fun. It’s not really just straight up art shows or music shows, but it’s all the weird stuff you might otherwise miss in the city."

Grub - "Grub happens the first and third Sundays of the month. You basically go out and dumpster dive and accumulate food that would normally be disgarded even though it’s perfectly sanitary, safe and edible. Then they create huge community dinners where it’s pay what you’re able to, so you could eat for free or you can give whatever amount you want to give. It’s a huge example of people coming together and sharing space, eating, drinking, telling, stories, collaborating and all that good stuff."

Rubulad – "Rubulad are incredible party throwers and a prime example of the type of people New York needs more of."
