Danielle Luft is a model. Jonathan Leder is a photographer. A few years back, Jonathan was given the assignment to photograph Danielle. Shortly after they got married and gave birth to a son, Jack, and a magazine, Jacques.
Jacques is nothing short of spectacular. It’s a nudie magazine that hearkens back to the retro Playboy Magazines that we all love. The art direction pulls from the back issues of Oui and obscure art magazines like Wet and Avant Garde. The women are real and the awful world of retouching has thankfully been left aside. In their own words, "Jacques is America’s only new luxury erotic magazine; a modern reimagining of the classic men’s magazines of yesteryear. We celebrate a return to the origins of the pulp title; offering edgy opinion, arousing interviews and fiery fiction blended with unparalleled pictorials illustrating the real beauty of real women.”
Look for yourself.
PHOTOGRAPHERS
Bruce Weber - "I had a chance to model for Bruce when I did French Vogue. He's one of the few photographers that I've worked with who treats his models with respect. He really treats his models as people and think that it shows in his photographs." - Danielle
Barbara Nitke - "Barbara's pictures are beautiful. She took a series of photos on a porn set and really captured the moments between the filming of the movie. She's a brilliant photographer and these photos really deserve a publisher." - Jonathan
Diane Arbus - "Diane's photos are honest, real, inspiring and provocative. When she freezes a moment they become something else. She captures things that most people don't notice." - Jonathan

Peter Lindbergh - "Peter is one of the few fashion photographers that I really like. I think he really respects his subjects and it shows. He's an amazing caster that can take beautiful pictures." - Jonathan
Willam Eggleston - "Eggleston really sees the most beautiful and unique moments. If it wasn't for him most of these mundane moments would be lost forever." - Jonathan
BOOKS & MAGAZINES
Nova Magazine - "Nova is a magazine from the 70's that had great art direction and a great spirit. It's really influenced our style." - Jonathan
Screw Magazine - "The early issues of Al Goldstein's Screw Magazine are fantastic. You should definitely try to find the issues from the 60's if you can. The art direction and the photography are simply incredible." - Jonathan
The Secret Wife of Louis XIV - "This is a great book and a great read. I'm really inspired by the culture of this period." - Danielle
House of Leaves - "This book is so weird but so great. It's written in an interesting way and breaks from traditional novel form. There are some passages that have to read in a mirror." - Danielle
MOVIES
The Agony and the Ecstasy - "This is a great movie that stars Charlton Heston. It's nice story about Michelangelo." - Jonathan
3 Women - "I love Shelley Duvall. I think she is so beautiful in this movie although she is a little weird and creepy." - Jonathan

Badlands - "This movie is poetic and has such an emptiness to it. You really can't make movies like this anymore." - Jonathan
EQUIPMENT
Rolleiflex 2.8 Planar Twin Lens - "I love using this camera. It's the same camera Diane Arbus started out using." - Jonathan
Leica M6 - "This is a great carefree camera that I'll occasionally use." - Jonathan
Canon F1 - "This is my go to camera. It's from the eighties and I probably use this camera more than any other." - Jonathan
HOTELS
Jane Hotel - "The Jane Hotel is a fantastic Manhattan hotel. It's one of our favorite locations for shoots. Some of the rooms are modeled after old school train cars. They're amazing." - Danielle

The Lafayette House - "The Lafayette House is another hotel in Manhattan that we use for shoots. It has a great look and they're really open to photo shoots. The hotel is actually an elegant, ornate and very decadent townhouse." - Jonathan
FABRICS, COSTUMES, LINGERIE & KNITTING
The Costume Institute - "I love looking at old school fabrics and I love costume history. The Costume Institute has one of the best collection around. It's so inspirational." - Danielle
Mood Fabrics - "Mood is one of my favorite fabric shops. They're always featured on Project Runway and they have the best stuff." - Danielle
The Yarn Tree - "The Yarn Tree is my favortie place to knit. It's actually where I learned. The lady who runs it made costumes for Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle." - Danielle
Kiki de Montparnasse - "This is on of the best lingerie shops anywhere. They've been really kind to us and have provided our models with elegant lingerie to wear." -Danielle

RESTAURANTS
Hasaki - "Hasaki is one of our favorite restaurants in New York. I used to work for a Japanese photographer and he would take me here all the time. It's my favoite sushi in the East Village." - Jonathan
Shun Lee Palace - "There's a scene in Woody Allan's Husband & Wives that takes place in this restuarant. It's one of the world's most famous Chinese restaurants and we love it." - Jonathan
La Grenouille - "La Grenouille is a great old school New York restaurant from the 70's. It's very famous. We got married here. They have a room in the restaurant that used be the studio of a painter, so it has a really kind of art studio feel to it. The owner was friends with lots of artists like Greta Garbo & Charlie Chaplin so it has a nice creative vibe to it. Also, check out the fireplace - it's amazing!" - Danielle
The Smile - "The Smile is a great cafe. We try to eat there at least once a week." - Jonathan

BOOKSTORES
Spoonbill & Sugartown - "This is one of our favorite bookstores. They have a great vintage porn collection for sale. It's hidden so you have to ask for it." - Jonathan
St. Mark's Bookshop - "The St. Mark's Bookshop is a lovely store in the East Village with a great collection of books." - Jonathan
PRINTERS
The Print Space - "The Print Space is a fantastic place. If you still shoot on film than this is the place to go for processing. They have excellent facilities." - Jonathan
"I don't see anything about our magazine being dirty or cheap"
::cue dirty, cheap, porn style music::
I guess Revel editors disagree!
I just don't like that now I can't release a magazine with my last name on it.
